AUTHOR PRESENTATION
A behind-the-scenes look at creating a book, including a power point presentation that shows a book in various stages of production.  We talk about where ideas come from, writing rough drafts, revising, and what it’s like to work with an editor.  Program is interactive and can be 25 – 55 min. depending on age/interests of the audience. (All ages)

WORKSHOPS
Workshops generally are 50 minutes long, but can easily be tailored to meet the needs/interests of a particular group.

PERSONAL NARRATIVE
CATFISH AND POPSICLES: WHERE STORIES COME FROM
Students learn how to turn memories into stories.  Using a power point program and drawing on examples from my own books as well as the work of others, I lead students through an in-class exercise in which we brainstorm for ideas and then talk about how to structure the memory of an experience into a story with an appropriate beginning, middle and end.  We talk about setting and dialogue.  We talk about word choice and details.  This workshop is designed to boost confidence and make students more comfortable with writing.  (Grades 3 and up)

CREATING A STORY
ONCE UPON A TIME: OUT OF THIN AIR
Using an in-class exercise students learn about the elements of a good story: character, plot, setting, dialogue, details, word choice, and effective use of the 5 senses.  Following a discussion of examples of strong writing drawn from age-appropriate books, students create their own stories.  In the younger grades, students brainstorm as a group to create a story.  In grades 3 and up, students write their own stories. (All ages)

POETRY WORKSHOP
PERSONA AND MASK POEMS
The sky's the limit when it comes to creating persona or mask poems.  Students imagine what it would be like to be a certain object, animal, insect, mythological beast, fairy tale character or folk hero and then write a poem in the voice of that "character."  Writing poems in the voice of another person, animal or thing helps boost creativity and develop empathy for others.  (Grades 2 and up)

PERSUASIVE WRITING
ESSAYS
This workshop is geared toward middle school and high school students, particularly those involved in debate or essay writing.  Drawing on my experience as a practicing attorney and former Legal Writing instructor, I teach students how to write a persuasive essay.  We talk about how to construct topic sentences, how to order supporting arguments, and how to state a conclusion.  Students also learn how to recognize and use rhetorical devices.  Following a class discussion, students draft essays on an assigned topic. (6th grade and up)

RESIDENCIES

Multi-day writing residencies. Each day we focus on a particular feature of creating stories.  The first day is generally dedicated to tips for generating story ideas.
Then we talk about:
How to structure a story
Creating characters
Using dialogue to reveal character
Effective use of details and the five senses
Word choice
Along the way, we also talk about process and revision. (Grades 3-5)mailto:Stephanie.Straus@candlewick.comshapeimage_1_link_0
